Why Defect is the Hardest Character (And How to Fix It)
Defect's 29.8% community win rate isn't because the character is bad — it's because orb management punishes mistakes harder than any other mechanic. Miss one Focus breakpoint against Aeonglass, and you're dead. Build too many Lightning orbs without block scaling, and Act 3 elites shred you.
The post-v0.105 Defect is significantly stronger than launch Defect. Shatter now double-evokes, Biased Cognition's downside was reduced, and Frost orbs generate 1 more block at base. But you need to understand the three-phase game plan to win consistently.

Focus: The Scaling Stat
Focus is Defect's unique scaling mechanic. Each point of Focus adds +1 damage to Lightning orbs and +1 Block to Frost orbs. At 5 Focus, a full board of Frost orbs passively blocks 30+ damage per turn — enough to trivialize most boss fights.
Key Focus breakpoints:
- 3 Focus — Minimum for Act 2 elites
- 5 Focus — Comfortable for Act 3
- 8+ Focus — Act 4 / Corrupted Heart territory
3 Best Defect Builds (Ranked)
1. Frost Wall — S-Tier (Highest A10 WR)
The safest and most consistent build. Stack Focus, fill orb slots with Frost, and passively block everything while your Lightning orbs chip away.
Core cards:
Game plan: Act 1: take any damage cards to survive. Act 2: pivot hard to Frost as soon as you find a Focus source. Act 3: you're unkillable — add a Dark orb for boss damage. Act 4: prioritize artifact strip for Biased Cognition.
Ideal relics: Data Disk, Inserter, Frozen Core, Runic Capacitor, Gold-Plated Cables, Mummified Hand.
2. Lightning DPS — A-Tier
Full offense — fill the board with Lightning orbs and evoke them rapidly for burst damage. Falls off against Act 3 bosses but speed-runs Act 1-2 brutally fast.
Core cards:
Weakness: No block scaling. You MUST find Frost orbs or a second damage engine by mid-Act 2, or elites will kill you before you kill them.
3. Dark Orb Nuke — B-Tier (Situational)
Set up a single massive Dark Orb, then evoke it with Multi-Cast or Dualcast for 200+ damage. Kills bosses in one turn, but terrible against multi-enemy fights.
Only run this build if you find an early Darkness+ and have a second plan for hallway fights (Lightning orbs, sweeping cards).

Relic Priority for Defect
Boss Relic Pick Order
- Inserter — +1 orb slot every 2 turns. Passive scaling beats almost every other boss relic.
- Frozen Core — Start each combat with 1 Frost orb + channel Frost when you take damage. Defect's best defensive boss relic.
- Runic Capacitor — +3 orb slots. Immediate power spike, no downside.
- Nuclear Battery — Start each combat with 1 Plasma orb. Free energy.
- Cursed Key / Velvet Choker / Sozu — Standard energy relics. Choker is bad in orb-heavy decks.

Act-by-Act Strategy
Act 1 — Survive & Collect Damage
Defect starts with a terrible basic deck (Zap + Dualcast). You need damage immediately. Take Ball Lightning, Cold Snap, Compile Driver over anything else in the first 3 floors. Your goal is to beat the Act 1 boss with at least 50% HP — don't greed for scaling yet.
Act 1 card priority: Damage > Damage > Block. You can block via Frost later.
Elite hunting: Only take 1 elite in Act 1. Defect dies to Gremlin Nob and Lagavulin without a strong damage frontload.
Act 2 — Pivot to Frost
This is where Defect runs die. The difficulty spike is brutal. You MUST find at least 1 Focus source (Defragment or Biased Cognition) and 1 Frost generator (Glacier, Coolheaded, Chill) before the first Act 2 elite.
Without Frost scaling, Shelled Parasite + Snake Plant will chip you to death. With it, you cruise.
Act 3 — Scale to Immortality
By now you should have 4-5 orb slots, 5+ Focus, and 70%+ Frost orb uptime. Add a Dark orb or Echo Form for boss damage. Against Aeonglass specifically, you need artifact strip before playing Biased Cognition — the debuff will get you killed.
Act 4 — Corrupted Heart
The Heart's Beat of Death (2 damage per card played) is brutal for Defect's card-heavy playstyle. Key techs:
- Have 8+ Focus before the fight starts
- Save a potion slot for Focus Potion or Artifact Potion
- Core Surge → Biased Cognition on turn 1
- Don't play orb-channeling cards after the first cycle — let passives do the work
