The Defect's Focus/Orb build is arguably the most powerful scaling engine in Slay the Spire 2. By stacking Focus and filling Orb slots with Frost Orbs, you generate an unbreakable Block wall that passively blocks all incoming damage — while your Lightning Orbs chip away at enemies turn after turn.

Core Strategy

The build revolves around three pillars:

  1. Focus GenerationDefragment, Biased Cognition, and Consume are your primary Focus sources. Each point of Focus increases your Frost block and Lightning damage by 1.
  2. Orb SlotsCapacitor gives you more Orb slots, allowing more simultaneous Frost/Lightning orbs. The more slots, the more passive value per turn.
  3. Orb GenerationGlacier, Coolheaded, and Cold Snap channel Frost. Ball Lightning and Electrodynamics handle offense.

Frost Wall (Defensive Scaling)

Lightning Storm (Offensive Scaling)

Claw Engine (Zero-Cost Aggro)

Not orb-reliant. Each Claw played increases ALL Claw damage by 2. All For One fetches every 0-cost card (including all your Claws) from discard into hand.

Stage-by-Stage Game Plan

  1. Act 1 — Grab early damage: Ball Lightning, Cold Snap, Compile Driver. Take 1-2 strong attacks to beat elites. First Defragment is an instant pick.
  2. Act 1 Boss — You should have ~3-4 Orbs channeled by now. Prioritize Glacier if offered. Remove Strikes at shops.
  3. Act 2 — This is where the build comes online. Capacitor + Defragment + Frost Orbs = you stop taking damage. Avoid taking too many attacks.
  4. Act 2 BossEcho Form or Biased Cognition should carry you. If no Focus yet, prioritize Coolheaded for draw consistency.
  5. Act 3 — Scale to the moon. Every Defragment pick is a priority. Loop doubles Orb passive triggers. You should be blocking 40+ per turn by now.
  6. Act 4Seek is crucial for turn-1 setup. Core Surge + Biased Cognition locks in permanent Focus.

💡 Pro Tip: Core Surge gives 1 Artifact. If you play it BEFORE Biased Cognition, the Artifact blocks the "lose 1 Focus per turn" debuff, making the +4/+5 Focus permanent. This is the strongest single combo in the game.
