Beginner-FriendlyEconomy Guide๐ 12 min read๐ Updated: May 2026
Gold is the most flexible resource in Slay the Spire 2. Unlike card rewards or relics โ which are random โ gold gives you agency. You choose what to buy. Bad shop decisions cost runs. Great shop decisions win runs at A20 where margins are razor-thin.
Gold Income: Where Does It Come From?
Source
Gold Range
Notes
Hallway fight
10โ20
Standard reward
Elite fight
25โ35
Plus a relic = highest value node
Boss fight
95โ105
Huge gold injection between acts
? Event rooms
0โ90
Highly variable; some events give Gold for HP/curse
Chest rooms
0โ60
Some chests contain gold, others contain curses that cost gold to remove
๐ง Card Removal Math: First removal = 75g, second = 100g, third = 125g, etc. There's also the "Purify" event and Smiling Mask for free/discounted removals. Always remove at shops if you have Strikes/Defends left โ it's the best use of gold before A15.
Relic Buying Priority: Tier List
Not all relics are worth their gold cost. Here's the valuation framework:
S-Tier: Always Buy (No Hesitation)
Relic
Cost
Why It's Worth It
Membership Card
150g
50% discount on ALL future purchases. Pays for itself in 1.5 shops.
Orange Pellets
170g
Clears all debuffs when you play Attack+Skill+Power in one turn. Breaks certain fights.
Dead Branch
280g
Win condition on its own with Shiv/Exhaust decks. Game-warping power.
Incense Burner
250g
Intangible every 6 turns. Plan around it โ cheat Boss/Elite turns.
Gambling Chip
250g
Discard and redraw any number of cards at turn 1 start. Fixes bad hands.
Fossilized Helix
220g
Buffer on first turn of each combat. Prevents 15+ damage per fight.
Decks that play โค3 cards per turn (Ironclad strength, Watcher stance)
F-Tier: Never Buy
Dream Catcher โ Resting is already a desperation play. Don't pay gold for it.
Darkstone Periapt โ You don't WANT curses. This rewards losing.
The Specimen โ Too situational; Corpse Explosion does the same job for free.
Bottled Flame โ Bottling an Attack sounds good until you brick your turn 1 draw for the rest of the run.
When to Buy Cards From the Shop
The general rule: don't buy cards unless they immediately upgrade your win condition. You get free card rewards from fights; gold is for relics and removals.
Situation
Buy?
Reasoning
Key missing piece for your archetype (e.g., Catalyst for poison deck)
โ Yes
Completes your win condition โ worth any cost
AoE card when you have zero AoE before Act 2
โ Yes
Mandatory purchase; Act 2 Elites will kill you without it
Don't buy Catalyst without poison cards. It's a curse until then.
Generic "good" common card
โ No
You'll get these from fights. Save gold for relics.
Colorless card that doesn't define your deck
โ No
Overpriced. Apotheosis/Master of Strategy are the exceptions.
Card from a different character's pool
โ No
Prismatic Shard opens this up but it's a meme, not a strategy
๐ The "Apotheosis Rule": If Apotheosis (upgrades all cards for the rest of combat) is in the shop, always buy it unless you already have one. It's the single best colorless card in the game and single-handedly wins runs. Cost: ~200g. Worth: infinite.
Potions: Hidden Shop Value
Potions are cheap (48โ60g) and save runs. The shop is your guaranteed potion source โ you'll find maybe 2โ3 potions from fights per act.
Buy These
Skip These
Ghost in a Jar (1-turn Intangible)
Block Potion (too low value)
Fairy in a Bottle (revive at 30% HP)
Explosive Potion (10 AoE is negligible)
Cultist Potion (+1 Str/turn, 3 turns)
Fear Potion (3 Vulnerable is weak vs Bosses)
Focus Potion (Defect = instant buy)
Weak Potion (you should have Weak in your deck)
Flex Potion (+5 Str this turn โ key burst turn)
Duplication Potion (doubles next card)
๐งด Potion Strategy: Don't hoard potions "for the final boss." Use them on Elites. An Elite kill = relic + gold + card + potion โ a potion that secures an Elite kill is a net positive investment of 48g. The most common A20 mistake is dying with 3 potions.
Act-by-Act Shopping Strategy
Act 1 Shop (Early โ Floor 1โ6)
Priority: Buy a powerful Attack card if you're going into an Elite path. Potions.
Skip: Don't remove cards yet โ 75g for one removal is half your gold. Wait.
Don't hoard: If you find an S-tier relic and can afford it, buy it. Early power compounds.
Jackpot finds: Apotheosis, Membership Card, Orange Pellets, any energy relic
Act 1 Boss โ Act 2 Shop (Critical Moment)
You just got ~100g from the Boss. You probably have 250โ350g total.
This is your most important shop. Buy an S/A-tier relic or premium rare card.
NOW remove a Strike/Defend. Your deck is taking shape.
If you're weak on AoE, buy an AoE card NOW. Act 2 will punish you hard without it.
Act 2โ3: Stay Flexible
By now your deck should have a clear identity. Buy relics that amplify it.
Card removal accelerates: At 150โ200g per removal, the Smiling Mask relic becomes very appealing.
Stock up on potions before Act 3 Boss gauntlet.
Events That Affect Gold Strategy
Event
Decision
Take It?
Golden Idol (Act 1)
Take idol: +25% gold income, lose some HP
โ Almost always yes. HP is a resource; +25% gold snowballs.
The Colosseum (Act 2)
Fight two waves back-to-back for 100g + rare relic
โ If you're healthy (>40 HP on A20, >30 on lower ascension)
Knowledge is Power (Act 2)
Spend 75g to upgrade all Strikes/Defends
โ ๏ธ Only if you have 5+ basics remaining AND enough gold
The Moai Head (Act 3)
Lose Golden Idol to gain 333 gold
โ Late-game: cash out. 333g buys an S-tier relic.
Faces of the Merchant (Act 2)
Buy Mask: 50% HP heal at shops
โ Too expensive (200g+). Shops are for relics, not healing.
The Joust (Act 2)
Bet 50g on winner. 50% chance to double.
โ ๏ธ Gambling. Only if you're desperate or have absurd gold surplus.
Gold Relics: Valuation Guide
Relic
Effect
Verdict
Old Coin
+300 gold immediately
โ S-tier. Instant relic purchase + removal.
Maw Bank
+12 gold per floor visited (max 400)
โ ๏ธ A-tier if found early, D-tier late. Needs ~20 floors to max out.
Golden Idol
+25% gold from all sources
โ A-tier. Stacks multiplicatively with Old Coin.
Smiling Mask
Card removal always costs 50g
โ ๏ธ A-tier if found Act 1 (plan 4+ removals), C-tier if Act 3.
Ssserpent Head
+50 gold each ? room
โ ๏ธ B-tier. You'll hit 5โ7 ? rooms per run = 250โ350g.
Ectoplasm
+1 energy, but cannot gain gold
โ F-tier Boss relic. Energy is good but zero gold = zero agency. Skip.
Common Mistakes
Buying "nice to have" relics instead of saving for an S-tier: 150g on a common relic you don't need = you can't afford the 280g Dead Branch in the next shop.
Skipping card removal: At A20, those 3 Strikes in your deck are actively losing you the run. Remove them.
Overvaluing colorless cards: Most colorless cards are mediocre and overpriced. Only Apotheosis, Master of Strategy, Panache, and The Bomb justify their cost.
Shopping too early on Act 1: You have ~100โ150g. Buying a common card is fine. Buying a relic leaves you broke and unable to afford the Act 2 shop with 300g.
Ignoring potions: 50g for a Ghost in a Jar that saves your run? That's a relic you paid 50g for.
Taking Ectoplasm: Just don't. Energy is not worth losing the entire economy. Coffee Dripper (no rests) or Fusion Hammer (no smithing) are strictly better.
