Beginner-Friendly Economy Guide ๐Ÿ• 12 min read ๐Ÿ“… Updated: May 2026

Gold is the most flexible resource in Slay the Spire 2. Unlike card rewards or relics โ€” which are random โ€” gold gives you agency. You choose what to buy. Bad shop decisions cost runs. Great shop decisions win runs at A20 where margins are razor-thin.

Gold Income: Where Does It Come From?

A typical A20 run earns 400โ€“650 total gold (not counting Old Coin/Golden Idol). That's ~5โ€“7 shop visits across 3 acts.

Shop Layout: What's Available?

Every shop (Act 1โ€“3) has the same structure:

SourceGold RangeNotes
Hallway fight10โ€“20Standard reward
Elite fight25โ€“35Plus a relic = highest value node
Boss fight95โ€“105Huge gold injection between acts
? Event rooms0โ€“90Highly variable; some events give Gold for HP/curse
Chest rooms0โ€“60Some chests contain gold, others contain curses that cost gold to remove
Old Coin relic+300S-tier relic; immediately enables aggressive shopping
Golden Idol event+25% goldGolden Idol amplifies all future gold income
Smiling Mask relic-50 removal costEffective +25 gold per removal; adds up over a run
SlotContainsBase Cost
Relics (ร—3)Random relics150โ€“180g (Common), 230โ€“270g (Uncommon), 300โ€“350g (Rare)
Cards (ร—5โ€“7)3 Attacks, 2 Skills, 1 Power (random)50โ€“73g (Common), 75โ€“99g (Uncommon), 100โ€“155g (Rare)
Colorless Cards (ร—2)Neutral cards85โ€“120g
Potions (ร—3)Random potions48โ€“60g
Card RemovalRemove 1 card from deck75g (first), +25g each subsequent
๐Ÿง  Card Removal Math: First removal = 75g, second = 100g, third = 125g, etc. There's also the "Purify" event and Smiling Mask for free/discounted removals. Always remove at shops if you have Strikes/Defends left โ€” it's the best use of gold before A15.

Relic Buying Priority: Tier List

Not all relics are worth their gold cost. Here's the valuation framework:

S-Tier: Always Buy (No Hesitation)

RelicCostWhy It's Worth It
Membership Card150g50% discount on ALL future purchases. Pays for itself in 1.5 shops.
Orange Pellets170gClears all debuffs when you play Attack+Skill+Power in one turn. Breaks certain fights.
Dead Branch280gWin condition on its own with Shiv/Exhaust decks. Game-warping power.
Incense Burner250gIntangible every 6 turns. Plan around it โ†’ cheat Boss/Elite turns.
Gambling Chip250gDiscard and redraw any number of cards at turn 1 start. Fixes bad hands.
Fossilized Helix220gBuffer on first turn of each combat. Prevents 15+ damage per fight.

A-Tier: Buy If It Fits Your Build

RelicCostBest Archetypes
Chemical X200gX-cost spell builds (Tempest, Malaise, Whirlwind, Doppelganger)
Kunai / Shuriken180gShiv/Silent attack spam
Data Disk180gDefect Focus builds (arguably S-tier for Defect)
Charon's Ashes200gIronclad exhaust builds
Tingsha / Tough Bandages180gSilent discard builds
Pocketwatch200gDecks that play โ‰ค3 cards per turn (Ironclad strength, Watcher stance)

F-Tier: Never Buy

When to Buy Cards From the Shop

The general rule: don't buy cards unless they immediately upgrade your win condition. You get free card rewards from fights; gold is for relics and removals.

SituationBuy?Reasoning
Key missing piece for your archetype (e.g., Catalyst for poison deck)โœ… YesCompletes your win condition โ€” worth any cost
AoE card when you have zero AoE before Act 2โœ… YesMandatory purchase; Act 2 Elites will kill you without it
Premium rare card (Offering, Adrenaline, Seek, Vault)โœ… YesPremium rares are insanely powerful and warping
Synergy piece you don't have the enabler for yetโŒ NoDon't buy Catalyst without poison cards. It's a curse until then.
Generic "good" common cardโŒ NoYou'll get these from fights. Save gold for relics.
Colorless card that doesn't define your deckโŒ NoOverpriced. Apotheosis/Master of Strategy are the exceptions.
Card from a different character's poolโŒ NoPrismatic Shard opens this up but it's a meme, not a strategy
๐Ÿ›’ The "Apotheosis Rule": If Apotheosis (upgrades all cards for the rest of combat) is in the shop, always buy it unless you already have one. It's the single best colorless card in the game and single-handedly wins runs. Cost: ~200g. Worth: infinite.

Potions: Hidden Shop Value

Potions are cheap (48โ€“60g) and save runs. The shop is your guaranteed potion source โ€” you'll find maybe 2โ€“3 potions from fights per act.

Buy TheseSkip These
Ghost in a Jar (1-turn Intangible)Block Potion (too low value)
Fairy in a Bottle (revive at 30% HP)Explosive Potion (10 AoE is negligible)
Cultist Potion (+1 Str/turn, 3 turns)Fear Potion (3 Vulnerable is weak vs Bosses)
Focus Potion (Defect = instant buy)Weak Potion (you should have Weak in your deck)
Flex Potion (+5 Str this turn โ†’ key burst turn)
Duplication Potion (doubles next card)
๐Ÿงด Potion Strategy: Don't hoard potions "for the final boss." Use them on Elites. An Elite kill = relic + gold + card + potion โ€” a potion that secures an Elite kill is a net positive investment of 48g. The most common A20 mistake is dying with 3 potions.

Act-by-Act Shopping Strategy

Act 1 Shop (Early โ€” Floor 1โ€“6)

Act 1 Boss โ†’ Act 2 Shop (Critical Moment)

Act 2โ€“3: Stay Flexible

Events That Affect Gold Strategy

EventDecisionTake It?
Golden Idol (Act 1)Take idol: +25% gold income, lose some HPโœ… Almost always yes. HP is a resource; +25% gold snowballs.
The Colosseum (Act 2)Fight two waves back-to-back for 100g + rare relicโœ… If you're healthy (>40 HP on A20, >30 on lower ascension)
Knowledge is Power (Act 2)Spend 75g to upgrade all Strikes/Defendsโš ๏ธ Only if you have 5+ basics remaining AND enough gold
The Moai Head (Act 3)Lose Golden Idol to gain 333 goldโœ… Late-game: cash out. 333g buys an S-tier relic.
Faces of the Merchant (Act 2)Buy Mask: 50% HP heal at shopsโŒ Too expensive (200g+). Shops are for relics, not healing.
The Joust (Act 2)Bet 50g on winner. 50% chance to double.โš ๏ธ Gambling. Only if you're desperate or have absurd gold surplus.

Gold Relics: Valuation Guide

RelicEffectVerdict
Old Coin+300 gold immediatelyโœ… S-tier. Instant relic purchase + removal.
Maw Bank+12 gold per floor visited (max 400)โš ๏ธ A-tier if found early, D-tier late. Needs ~20 floors to max out.
Golden Idol+25% gold from all sourcesโœ… A-tier. Stacks multiplicatively with Old Coin.
Smiling MaskCard removal always costs 50gโš ๏ธ A-tier if found Act 1 (plan 4+ removals), C-tier if Act 3.
Ssserpent Head+50 gold each ? roomโš ๏ธ B-tier. You'll hit 5โ€“7 ? rooms per run = 250โ€“350g.
Ectoplasm+1 energy, but cannot gain goldโŒ F-tier Boss relic. Energy is good but zero gold = zero agency. Skip.

Common Mistakes

  1. Buying "nice to have" relics instead of saving for an S-tier: 150g on a common relic you don't need = you can't afford the 280g Dead Branch in the next shop.
  2. Skipping card removal: At A20, those 3 Strikes in your deck are actively losing you the run. Remove them.
  3. Overvaluing colorless cards: Most colorless cards are mediocre and overpriced. Only Apotheosis, Master of Strategy, Panache, and The Bomb justify their cost.
  4. Shopping too early on Act 1: You have ~100โ€“150g. Buying a common card is fine. Buying a relic leaves you broke and unable to afford the Act 2 shop with 300g.
  5. Ignoring potions: 50g for a Ghost in a Jar that saves your run? That's a relic you paid 50g for.
  6. Taking Ectoplasm: Just don't. Energy is not worth losing the entire economy. Coffee Dripper (no rests) or Fusion Hammer (no smithing) are strictly better.

Sample Gold Budget: Ideal A20 Run

ActGold EarnedGold SpentNet
Act 1~150g50g (1 potion), 0 removal100g
Act 1 Boss+100gโ€”200g
Act 2 Shopโ€”250g (A-tier relic), 75g (removal)-125g (spend ~325g)
Act 2+180g50g (potion), 100g (removal)30g
Act 2 Boss+100gโ€”130g
Act 3 Shopโ€”150g (relic), 60g (potion), 125g (removal)~0g
Total~530g~860gโ€”

Note: This assumes no Old Coin or Membership Card, which dramatically shift the budget. With Old Coin, expect to buy 1โ€“2 extra relics and 1โ€“2 extra removals.

Key Takeaways

  1. Gold priority: S-tier relics > card removal > key archetype cards > potions > A-tier relics > everything else
  2. The Act 2 Shop is the most important. You have ~300g, your deck needs direction. Make it count.
  3. Card removal wins runs. Removing all Strikes is the single biggest power increase in the game.
  4. Buy potions, use them on Elites. A 50g potion that secures an Elite kill is the best ROI in STS2.
  5. Never take Ectoplasm. Zero gold means you can't remove cards, can't buy relics, can't buy potions. It's a trap.
  6. Membership Card is the best relic in the game. If you find it in a shop, buy it immediately. It pays for itself within 1โ€“2 purchases.
