Slay the Spire 2 speedruns are a test of decisiveness, muscle memory, and risk tolerance. Unlike traditional gameplay, speedruns value speed over safety β€” you'll take fights faster, skip campfire animations, and path aggressively. The world record for STS2 (Any%) sits at approximately 4–6 minutes at the top level.

Character Tier List for Speedrunning

TierCharacterAvg Any% TimeWhy
πŸ₯‡ SIronclad4–6 minWhirlwind + Flex/Strength. Kills everything in 1–2 turns. No setup needed.
πŸ₯‡ SWatcher4–6 minWrath stance double damage. Blasphemy ends fights. Stance-swapping is fast.
πŸ₯ˆ ASilent6–8 minShiv spam + Thousand Cuts. Slightly slower due to multi-hit animations.
πŸ₯‰ BDefect7–10 minOrb setup takes time. Electro/Tempest helps but can't match upfront burst.

Optimal Speedrun Builds (Any%)

Ironclad: Whirlwind Rush

πŸ† WR Route (Ironclad): Act 1: take 3 combats, upgrade Whirlwind at first fire, grab Flex/Offering if offered. Act 2: hit ? rooms, shops for ChemX/Necro. Act 3: same. Kill everything with Whirlwind. That's the route.

Watcher: Stance Burst

⚠️ Watcher Speedrun Warning: Blasphemy's "die next turn" means you must end the fight on that turn. Double-check lethal before pressing Blasphemy. A dead run = 0 speedrun time.

Silent: Shiv Rush

Time-Saving Techniques

TechniqueTime SavedHow To Do It
Fast Mode~40% per runSettings β†’ Gameplay β†’ "Fast Mode" ON. Animations play 2Γ— speed.
Key bindings (1–9, E)~5–8 seconds/fightNumber keys 1–9 select cards. "E" confirms end-turn. Never click with mouse.
Skip card rewards~3–5 seconds/rewardPress Escape or click "Skip" immediately. Don't read card text unless hunting a key card.
Skip relic inspection~2–3 seconds/relicDon't read relic text. You know them all. Click through immediately.
Campfire: instant Smith~2 seconds/firePress the Smith button before the flame animation completes. Muscle memory.
Map pathing: pre-planned~1–3 seconds/nodeKnow your next 3–5 floors immediately. Never hover and read.
Skip potion usage animation~1 secondRight-click potions to skip the drinking animation.
Shop: pre-determined buy list~5–10 secondsKnow what you need before entering. Scan relics β†’ skip if nothing β†’ leave. 3 second shop.
⏱️ Total Time Saved With All Techniques: A typical 45-minute casual run becomes ~12–15 minutes just by enabling Fast Mode and using keyboard shortcuts. Add routing knowledge and you're in the 6–10 minute range.

Optimal Routing (Any% Ironclad)

Act 1 Route

  1. Floors 1–3: Fight 2–3 hallway combats. Take Whirlwind (highest priority), Anger, Flex. Skip all other cards.
  2. Floor 4–5: Campfire β†’ Upgrade Whirlwind. This is non-negotiable. Whirlwind must be upgraded.
  3. Floors 6–10: Path through ? rooms. Events are faster than fights. Skip Elites β€” relic reward is not worth the 30–45 second fight.
  4. Floor 11–14: More ? rooms. If forced into combat, Whirlwind kills in 1–2 turns.
  5. Floor 15: Shop (if available). Buy Flex, Offering, Chemical X, Bag of Marbles. Remove a Defend.
  6. Floor 16: Campfire β†’ Upgrade Flex or Offering.
  7. Floor 17: Act Boss.

Act 2 Route

  1. Priority 1: Path through ? rooms and shops. Avoid combats when possible.
  2. Shop buy list: Chemical X > Necronomicon > Akabeko > Du-Vu Doll > Bag of Marbles
  3. Card picks: Double Tap (doubles Whirlwind), second Whirlwind, Offering. Skip everything else.
  4. Campfires: Upgrade Double Tap. If you picked a second Whirlwind, upgrade it too.
  5. Avoid Elites β€” not worth the time on Any%.

Act 3 Route

  1. ? rooms > Shops > Campfires > Combats. By Act 3 your Whirlwind should be 1-shotting hallways. If not, you need more Strength or ChemX.
  2. Final shop: Buy potions (Flex Potion, Duplication Potion, Cultist Potion). These secure the Boss kill.
  3. Final campfire: Heal if HP is low. You should be at ~25–40 HP at minimum for the Boss.
  4. Act 3 Boss: Flex β†’ Whirlwind β†’ Offering β†’ Whirlwind β†’ dead. If you have ChemX, this is a turn 1 kill.

Speedrun Benchmarks

Sub 15 minπŸ₯ˆ IntermediateFast Mode, basic routing knowledge, any character
Sub 25 minπŸ₯‰ Casual SpeedFast Mode, no routing knowledge needed. Just play fast.
30+ minβ€”Standard play. Not speedrunning yet. Turn on Fast Mode as step 1.

Common Speedrun Mistakes

  1. Taking too many cards. Your deck should be 10–15 cards maximum. Every extra card dilutes Whirlwind draws.
  2. Reading card text. You should know every card by its art and energy cost. Reading costs 1–2 seconds per reward screen β€” that's 20–30 seconds per run.
  3. Pathing into Elites. Elites take 30–60 seconds to kill. A relic is not worth 30–60 seconds in Any% speedruns. Skip them.
  4. Not upgrading Whirlwind immediately. Unupgraded Whirlwind does 5 dmg/hit. Upgraded = 8 dmg/hit. That's a 60% damage increase.
  5. Forgetting Fast Mode. Fast Mode is ~40% of your total time savings. If you forget to enable it, you've already lost.
  6. Using mouse for everything. Keyboard-only (number keys + E) is significantly faster than mouse clicking.
  7. Picking Silent/Defect for Any%. They're objectively slower. Play Ironclad or Watcher if you care about time.
  8. Forgetting End Turn shortcut. Pressing "E" to end your turn saves ~0.5 seconds per turn, which adds up to ~90 seconds over a full run.

A20 Speedrun Differences

A20 speedrunning requires a fundamentally different approach from Any%:

⏱️ A20 Speedrun vs. Casual A20: A casual A20 run takes 45–90 minutes. An A20 speedrun with Fast Mode, key bindings, and routing knowledge takes 15–25 minutes β€” same difficulty, 3Γ— faster.

Best Speedrun Seeds (Practice These)

Key Takeaways

  1. Enable Fast Mode. This alone cuts your run time by ~40%. Do it now.
  2. Learn keyboard shortcuts. Number keys to select cards, E to end turn. Never click.
  3. Play Ironclad or Watcher. They are objectively the fastest characters for Any% speedruns.
  4. Whirlwind is your win condition. Upgrade it immediately. Buy ChemX at every opportunity.
  5. Skip card rewards. Your deck should be lean (10–15 cards). Only take cards that directly support your win condition.
  6. Practice one seed to perfection. Speedrunning is about optimization, not variety. Nail one seed before trying random seeds.
